The Bukharian Jewish Congress of the USA and Canada, the Consultate General of Uzbekistan in New York and the Uzbek-American Art Foundation present Shashmaqam Forever -- The Masters of Central Asian Classical Music: A Memorial Concert for Turgun Alimatov (1922-2008), at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 7:30PM. The concert will feature many of the leading contemporary masters of Shashmaqam, the classical music system of Central Asia.
In each case the performers can be seen as the inheritors of a dynastic musical tradition practiced professionally through two or three generations of their family. Uniquely, this concert will present the vocal and instrumental components of the Shashmaqam repertoire in the way they were performed in royal courts prior to the twentieth century -- by small one or two person troupes.
